DVD-Video

The DVD-Video format was introduced in 1997 as the replacement format for VHS video tape. Developed by a number of global consumer electronics companies including Sony, Phillips, Toshiba and Thompson along with Warner Brothers and other movie studios, the format delivers standard definition video (in both widescreen and standard aspect ratios) in combination with 5.1 surround sound. Other features include subtitles, parental guidance, multiple audio streams for foreign language versions and high-resolution PCM audio in 2.0 channel stereo.
